The Internship Program
An internship is a work placement coordinated through the Graduate Careers Centre. The internship program allows students with relevant experience and/or professional knowledge congruent to the needs of a business to be engaged in a variety of ways to enable you to achieve your business goals.
The student can be engaged in:
- Paid internship
- Unpaid internship (Conditions apply - Unpaid internships are limited to 100 hours per engagement)
- Part time work during teaching periods
- Full time work during non-teaching periods (December – February and July each year)
The Internship Coordinator will discuss your organisation’s requirements, and provide you with an overview of suitable internship models. Once we have a thorough understanding of your needs, the Internship Coordinator will undertake and manage the recruitment process which includes the promotion and pre-selection of a shortlist of candidates. Interviews will be arranged at a mutually convenient time and the final selection will be made by your organisation.
The Internship Coordinator will work closely with you to ensure the most suitable candidate is selected for the role. In addition, the Internship Coordinator will keep in close contact with you and the intern to ensure you are both achieving the desired outcomes.
Benefits of Participating in the Internship Program
Your organisation can experience many benefits by hosting an intern. These include:
- Accessing talented students who can apply their specialist knowledge to your business
- Gaining an understanding of new practices and perspectives to business issues
- Filling roles in peak business periods in a flexible way
- Enhancing the profile of your organisation for both potential employees and clients
- Training and development opportunities for employees moving into leadership roles
- The opportunity to assess the intern’s performance and suitability to the role before a permanent offer is made
Students benefit greatly from internships and work experience opportunities where they apply their theoretical knowledge in a practical way, are able to engage with others in a business environment and develop a professional network in their chosen industry.
“Our intern has proven to be a real asset and a quick learner, allowing me to outsource work to her, which she has the capacity to complete relatively independently. I believe she's also had the opportunity to apply some of what she has learnt at university.” Intern host 2007
