Introduction to Student Experience
At the Faculty of Economics & Commerce we want to give you access to programs and activities which are designed to enrich your university experience, support your learning, develop your skills, facilitate your involvement, and help you to realise your potential as a leader and effective global citizen. A number of opportunities are available to both our undergraduate and graduate Commerce students that allow them to develop their skills and abilities, and ensure that they get the most out of university life.
The services, facilities and support we provide are essential elements of the student experience at the Commerce Student Centre and Melbourne Graduate School of Management.
Covering every aspect of student life, our services extend beyond the classroom to enrich your studies, maintain your wellbeing and prepare you for success after graduation.
They include pre-term orientation programs, career programs and functions and events that help you develop professional skills while building networks and friendships to carry over into the next phase of your life and career.
Whether you wish to directly enter employment after your studies or continue with further studies, the skills you will develop from participating in one or more of the activities offered by the Faculty and University will benefit you. You will develop employability skills which all organisations – public or private, corporate or voluntary, as well as universities - look for in graduates. These include excellent communication, teamwork, leadership, problem solving, flexibility, interpersonal, self-confidence, organisational, initiative and motivational skills.
What’s more, employability skills are transferable, so this means you will be able to use them no matter where you go, what you decide to do, or how your future unfolds.
Commerce students can choose to participate in a wide variety of degree-enriching activities. A taste of some of what is available is contained in the Student Experience flyer (723KB pdf) and all of which are outlined on this site.
Undergraduate team wins Hong Kong case competition!
Faculty of Economics undergraduate team known as ‘Oz Consulting’ has won the 2009 Citi International Case competition at HKUST, Hong Kong with an innovative ten-year business plan for the world’s leading Smartcard Company. The University of Southern California and National University of Singapore came second and third respectively.
Held in Hong Kong from November 2-5, the seventh annual Citi International Case Competition (CICC) attracted a record 21 teams from ten countries: Australia, Canada, China, Finland, Japan, Korea, The Netherlands, Singapore, Thailand and the US. The Citi International Case Competition is jointly organised by Citi and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology’s School of Business and Management (HKUST), and sponsored by the Citi Foundation.
Case competitions are amongst the most demanding activities that a student can do. Case competitions give students the opportunity to deal with challenges facing an actual company, a fantastic example of knowledge transfer. Students require highly developed analytical skills, outstanding presentations skills, team work and leadership, and extraordinary stamina. To succeed students must also work under intense pressure, with limited respite.
To win does not come easy. The Faculty has a careful selection process and many weeks sacrificing Saturdays are spent of intensive training. Excellent training is always provided by Professor Greg Whitwell, colleagues in marketing Professor Simon Bell and accounting Dr Jennifer Grafton who gave up their valuable time to train the students. Special thanks also goes to past participants Tristan Webster and Marc Costabile by providing advice in practice sessions such is on analytical and presentation skills, and whom are now employed by leading consulting firms themselves.
Such case competitions brings together outstanding students from leading business schools from around the world to compete; all get to see the quality of the undergraduate education they obtain at Melbourne enables them to compete effectively against some of the most widely respected business schools in the world. The result at CCIC is evidence that our graduates can justly say that they are world class.
