Faculty of Economics and Commerce Student Experience

Case Study Competitions

Case Study competitions involve teams of commerce students from universities around the world who compete to resolve real-life business problems. The selected teams present their solutions to a judging panel of business professionals.

Further opportunties will be advertised here and in the News for Commerce Students newsletter as they become available. Below are some of the Case Study competitions that the Faculty of Economics and Commerce have participated in to date.

University of Auckland, Business School Champions Trophy, Auckland New Zealand

The Champions Trophy is a competition held at the University of Auckland featuring hosts of international case competitions, the winners at these competitions, as well as consistent performing universities.  The Champions Trophy had its inaugural launch in 2008 and featured twelve teams from around the world.  All competitors were required to complete three preliminary rounds before advancing to a final round.  The winner of the competition can really claim that they are “the best of the best.”

Competition dates for 2008 were from 28th January to 3rd  February. If we attend again in 2009, we would expect approximate application dates to be in October 2008.

11th Annual Marshall International Case Competition (MICC), Los Angeles, USA

http://www.marshall.usc.edu/Undergraduate/MICC

To quote from the Marshall website:  “This world class competition highlights the strategic challenges and managerial dilemmas faced by global business leaders.  Competing teams from premier business schools work under pressure to solve a real business problem, using simulated business conditions such as time-critical deadlines and incomplete information, to formulate workable, action-oriented recommendations”.

The case is an endurance test.  Teams arrive in LA on the Tuesday.  A case is distributed early on the Friday morning and the team works all day and usually most of the night preparing their response.  The following day the team makes a presentation in front of an expert panel of judges.  They then answer questions from the judging panel.  If the team is in the top two of its group, it presents again in the afternoon.

Marshall states that students must be undergraduates.

Melbourne has been participating in the competition for several years.  To quote again from the Marshall website:  “Twenty-nine top-ranked international and U.S. business schools and a faculty advisor to attend the competition.  Team members should possess expertise in a wide range of business disciplines from finance, marketing, economics and accounting, to international issues, technology, quantitative thinking, and management.”

We have been invited to attend the 2009 competition which will be held from 17 – 21 February 2009.  Further information will be released later in the year, and we will be calling for applications in October.  Please check the website around early October.

Copenhagen Business School (CBS) Case Competition, Copenhagen, Denmark

http://www.casecompetition.com/

Following our outstanding performance in the CBS Case Competition in 2007, which led to a place in the final round, we were invited to participate in the CBS Case Competition 2008 at the Copenhagen Business School in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The dates were from 24th to 29th February 2008.  If we attend in 2009, we would expect approximate application dates to be in September 2008.

The competition structure is similar to Marshall.  This will be the seventh CBS Case Competition.  The competition brings together students from twelve internationally recognised schools worldwide.

CBS is more restrictive.  It requires that students be in their last year of undergraduate education.

Thammasat Undergraduate Business Challenge 2008, Thailand
