What is Orientation?
Orientation is one of the most important weeks of the University calendar for new students.
It aims to introduce you to the University including lecture and tutorial formats and student support services, familiarise you with the physical layout and campus environment and to understand the expectations the University has of its students.
What’s on during Orientation?
Academic and social activities are planned by the University, Faculty and Student Societies.
Semester 2, 2007 orientation dates: Monday 16 July – Friday 20 July

In addition:
- Take a library tour to discover the resources and facilities of the libraries you will need to use
- Locate lecture theatres and tutorial rooms
- Locate faculty and departmental offices and key staff
- Join clubs and societies to purse your interests and meet new people.
Orientation is the official start of the University year and will provide a lot of information, as well as some experience of University teaching, so there is less to worry about in the first weeks of semester. It is important that you come along and we look forward to your participation!

Your Subjects
Subject changes
Unsure about your subjects?
You can make changes to your subject selection until the end of the second week of classes. But the following are some important hints when making changes:
Have I missed important classes in the subject I wish to change into?
Although you can change your subjects up until the end of the second week of classes, it may not be practical to change if you have missed too many classes. If you are thinking of changing subjects, make sure you find out what you need to and make the change as soon as possible to minimise the disruption to your semester.
Have I missed the important dates for changes?
There are a series of important dates you should be aware of. These affect: whether you can add a new subject into your enrolment; whether you will be charged a fee for the subject from which you are withdrawing; and what will be recorded on your results transcript. Make sure you have all the information before you go ahead. The Subject Selection page provides important information regarding changing your subjects, including important dates. If you wish to change your subjects after the second week of semester, make sure that you speak to someone in the Faculty Undergraduate Student Centre.
How many subjects will I then be enrolled in?
If you withdraw from a subject after the first two weeks of the semester, then you will not be able to add another subject into your enrolment. Local students may be able to enrol in 37.5 points, but this may affect Youth Allowance or Austudy payment, so get advice before you reduce your study load. International students are required to enrol in 50 points each semester, and any less can affect your visa. International students should seek advice before enrolling in less than 50 points.

Activating your university email account
Your free University email account is one of the most common ways you'll be notified of important things at the University. This is the way you may be informed about problems with your subject selection, be sent reminders by lecturers, or be kept in touch with important things going on around campus. Your University email account is so important, in fact, that you'll find you're not able to access your timetable or make changes to your enrolment if it hasn't been activated.
As soon as you have confirmed your enrolment you should activate your email account by following the instructions. If you enrol online, you will have already done this.
