Faculty Human Ethics Advisory Committee (FHEAC)

The Faculty Human Ethics Advisory Committee (FHEAC) reviews ethical applications and monitors on-going research projects involving human participants.

All staff and students conducting research that involves human participation must submit an application for human research ethics approval to the FHEAC. From 2007 these applications are to be submitted via the Themis Human Ethics module.

The FHEAC is responsible for approving 'low risk' research projects undertaken by both students and staff. It also considers high risk projects to ensure a recommendation is forwarded to the Arts, Education, Economics and Commerce Sub Committee of the central University's Human Ethics Advisory Committee.

The FHEAC composition, terms of reference, functions and responsibilities and method of operation conform to the requirements of the University of Melbourne Human Research Ethics Committee . All research involving humans carried out at the University of Melbourne must be conducted in accordance with the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Research Involving Humans (1999) and other guidelines published from time to time by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).
