First Year Peer Mentoring Program
The First-Year Peer Mentoring Program aims to help new students make the transition into university life as smoothly as possible, by providing a support network, opportunities to meet new people and a forum in which to ask other students questions.
Mentoring groups are led by later-year students who have volunteered and trained to be mentors. Groups meet once a week for the first four weeks of each semester, starting in Week One.
During the meetings mentors:
- show you around the Faculty and University facilities
- provide useful informationon about living and studying in Melbourne
- give you strategies for getting the most out of lectures and tutorials
- give you tips, such as where to find past examination papers, where to buy cheap groceries and the best places to visit in Melbourne.
Being experienced students, mentors are not only a great source of information and a sounding board for questions and concerns, but they are also a friend.
The program is a good way to meet other students in your course and to perhaps begin new friendships. Being part of the program also gives you a chance to build your networking and communication skills, your adaptability skills and team work skills and also gives you the opportunity to practice your adaptability in a new, challenging environment. Taking up the opportunity to learn from an experienced peer is not only a great way to familiarise yourself with new surroundings, fast-tracking that 'I belong here' feeling, but mentoring is also a great way to build up your practical skills.
