Course Planning

Graduate coursework students are encouraged to consult with staff from the Melbourne Graduate School of Management Student Centre if they are having difficulties with their course planning. Students should take into consideration any prerequisite subjects that exist for the subjects they wish to enrol into. Students will not be permitted to enrol into a subject for which they have not met the prerequisites.

Please read the course outline for your course in the Online Handbook to assist with course planning.

Change my subjects

After 30 November 2007, you will need to submit a Subject Change Form in order to make subject changes. If you want to do a subject that is not part of your program, you will need to get written approval on the back of the form from the subject coordinator and your Academic Program Director.
Online Subject Selection is available between 23 February - 9 March.

Credit and Exemption

If you believe you have covered the material in previous studies, you may like to apply for credit or exemption. Credit or exemption is normally available for core subjects only, not electives. If you believe that you are eligible for a credit or elective, you should not enrol into that subject, until your application has been assessed.

Overloading

Sudents in all graduate programs are not normally permitted to enrol in more than four (12.5 point) subjects (or equivalent load) in Semester 1 or Semester 2 and are only permitted to enrol in a maximum of two (12.5 point) subjects during summer semester, if they have a good academic record and the timetable permits. Students must request permission to exceed these limits. In extreme extenuating circumstances students may be permitted to enrol in 5 (12.5 point) subjects (or equivalent load) in semester 1 or 2 only. Students who wish to overload must apply in writing to the Associate Dean (Academic Programs) who will consult with the Academic Program Director to assess the suitability and circumstances of each case on an individual basis.

Coursework limits

Students are not permitted to include more than eight subjects of coursework in Graduate and Postgraduate Diploma courses.

Students are not permitted to include more than six subjects of coursework in the Master of Commerce.

Leave of Absence

Leave of Absence requests will be considered only from students who have completed a minimum of one semester's work. Leave of Absence is normally granted for a maximum period of twelve months and only in exceptional cases will this period be extended.

International students considering a Leave of Absence should note that this is only approved in exceptional circumstances. Please contact the University's International Centre or the Melbourne Graduate School of Management Student Centre on Level 4 of the Alan Gilbert building for advice. An Information Sheet (PDF, 98kb) and Form (PDF, 60kb) for International Students wishing to take Leave of Absence is available from the Melbourne Graduate School Student Centre.

Students on Leave of Absence are required to inform their Academic Program Manager in writing of their intention to resume their course by 30 June (if on leave until the end of first semester only) or by 31 October (if on leave until the end of second semester). Failure to do so will be interpreted as termination of the course. To apply for Leave of Absence, please complete a Cancellation of Enrolment Request Form (PDF, 75kb) available from the Melbourne Graduate School Student Centre.

Discontinuation

Any student intending to discontinue their course of study must notify their Academic Program Manager formally in writing or by completing a Cancellation of Enrolment Request Form (PDF, 75kb) available from the Melbourne Graduate School of Management Student Centre.
