Course Planning Guidelines
The purpose of course planning is to design a program that builds on your prior education and work experience, and develops your skills for your future career goals.
Course planning is customized to the individual student, on a case-by-case basis.
However, there are some broad guidelines to assist you and the program director in planning an effective program that builds towards your target career outcome. The guidelines are as follows:
Subject Areas you need to cover:
1. Accounting
All students are expected to complete 306-660 Accounting for Decision Making in the first four subjects of their program, unless they have already completed a university level accounting subject (including both financial accounting and cost accounting) with a grade equivalent to a University of Melbourne H3 (65%).
2. Microeconomics
All students are expected to complete 316-660 Managerial Economics (formerly Microeconomics & Strategy) in the first four subjects of their program, unless they have already completed a University level Microeconomics subject with a minimum grade equivalent to a University of Melbourne H3 (65%)
3. Business & IT
All students (i.e., in both the 16 and 12 subject programs) will be expected to take 306-490 Business and Information Technology in the first semester of their program. Students with substantial business AND IT background may be exempted from this requirement. This will satisfy the pre-requisite requirements for all group 2 subjects. Lecturers in elective subjects may assume you have covered the content of 306-490 Business and Information Technology previously.
4. Business Process Analysis
All students are expected to complete 306-662 Information Processes & Control, unless they have already completed a University level Business Process Analysis subject with a minimum grade equivalent to a University of Melbourne H3 (65%). 306-662 Information Process & Control covers key marketable skills in documenting business processes and control system design. Students should take this either together with or immediately following completion of 306-660 Accounting for Decision Making.
All students are expected to complete 325-695 Project Management unless they have already completed a University level Project Management subject with a minimum grade equivalent to a University of Melbourne H3 (65%).
Requirements
To ensure sufficient depth of knowledge, all students are expected to complete at least two of the following group 2 units: 306-674/675 Enterprise Resource Planning Systems, 306-665 Managing IT, 306-623 Information Architecture, 306-622 Business Intelligence, 306-661 Electronic Commerce.
Maintain Adequate Breadth
Students with an IT background will be expected to take a significant number of electives in the broader business areas (i.e., non-group 2 units). Similarly, students with a business background will be expected to take a significant number of electives in the IT area (i.e., group 2 units or equivalent).
Degree Requirements
It is a degree requirement that all students take at least 2 group 1 subjects, 2 group 2 subjects, and 1 subject each from group 3, group 4 and group 5. Note these are minimum requirements only. The Program Director reserves the right to impose additional group requirements consistent with need to ensure adequate breadth in your degree (per Guideline 6).
